Building a transport app through fast-paced Workshops
How to act strategically amid a global pandemic and historic drought
Baleport™ was born in crisis—a hybrid response to logistical gridlock during the COVID-19 pandemic and the operational paralysis caused by a historic drought. We built an on-demand transport marketplace to help farmers move hay, livestock, and equipment efficiently across state lines, addressing both urgency and infrastructure failure.

In June of 2020, the Baleport™ Innovation Team conducted a series of design sprints to rapidly create a transport marketplace connecting farmers and haulers. The thesis at the time was that agricultural supply chains were breaking under pandemic and climate pressures, and a nimble, tech-enabled logistics network could provide relief and resilience. We developed a cross-platform MVP, brand system, and load-matching algorithm that enabled rural users to post, accept, and track hauls in real time—even with limited connectivity.
The Problem:
Rural farmers and haulers lacked a reliable, flexible transport solution during a perfect storm of closed borders, labor shortages, and extreme weather. Traditional brokerages were too slow or inaccessible, and existing freight platforms ignored the specific needs of agriculture.
How Might We:
How might we create an on-demand logistics platform tailored to the unpredictable and underserved needs of rural agriculture during crisis?
Information Architecture:
After determining core functionality we structured how value will be delivered in a sitemap diagram. This provided a solid foundation to begin prototyping the app.
Marketplace MVP: Built for Hay, Not Hype
We designed and launched a responsive, mobile-friendly marketplace tailored for rural farmers and haulers. From UX research to UI systems, every pixel served a specific constraint: speed, clarity, and signal resilience.
